Module 2: Psychological consultancy for teachers

Overview
Curriculum

This module focuses on the ability of the school psychologist to offer consultation services to teachers aiming at opening the pathways to establish interventions for a student in a classroom.

Consultation is a collaborative process among the school psychologist and the teacher to promote success in students who are struggling in the learning process.

Consultation can be used to help intervene with children displaying behavioral, emotional, or academic difficulties and help prevent the development of a more serious issue. Together, both the school psychologist and the teacher will identify the problem, develop specific goals, brainstorm interventions, and create a plan to help the student become more successful. The psychologist helps the teacher to develop a detailed and specific plan for the student.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Establish a cooperative partnership with the school psychologist and share the mutual goal to promote success for a student.
  • Be guided to clarify the problem in clear, concise, and measurable terms in order to develop goals and expectations.
  • Collect baseline data for future evaluation of the intervention and to clarify the problem by investigating the behavior of the student taking into consideration environmental, instructional, and personal factors.
  • Explore, suggest and determine intervention options in collaboration with the school psychologist to guide students that struggle with learning.
  • Evaluate and select together with the school psychologist the most appropriate intervention.
  • Implement the selected strategy for a period of time as decided with the school psychologist.
  • Evaluate the intervention effectiveness and follow-up through measurement processes by comparing current data with the baseline data.
  • Determine if modifications to the intervention are needed in cooperation with the school psychologist.
